Black, female and ready to change the game
We are so excited to hear about a bold, unique and progressive South African wine brand that will be taking the UK shelves by storm this Autumn.
AMANDLA is a new brand, created by HER Wine Collection, a majority black-owned and 100% black female-run business, is a celebration of the diverse history of Africa, the vibrancy of black culture and the collective stories of the incredible team behind this wine.
AMANDLA, meaning POWER, stands for the courage and resilience within women. It is a celebration of FREEDOM and the exciting opportunities that the FUTURE holds.
The range consists of a Shiraz-Zinfandel and a Sauvignon Blanc, produced from vineyards in the Western Cape and made at the HER Wine Collection cellars. Retail will be around £9, with confirmed listings in Waitrose and Sainsbury's from September. A Blush Rosé is available from early 2023.
HER Wine Collection is headed up by managing director and talented winemaker Praisy Dlamini. The business is run by a dynamic team of black wine industry women, from the winemaker, the viticulturist and the QC, right through to the marketing, finance and logistics.
‘Amandla’, she cried, to which the crowd joyously responded ‘Awethu’. Power within us – a celebration of Africa and in particular the women who run this business and make this wine.
Speaking on the new launch, Amandla MD Praisy Dlamini said: ‘AMANDLA encompasses the vibrancy of black culture, reflects a modern inclusive lifestyle, and aims to break down social barriers. With AMANDLA we want to 1 inspire and excite the new generation of wine drinkers and nurture future generations of black female business owners. This is something we can call our own in a traditionally white male-dominated environment. We are changing the game!’
The team has also set up the Amandla Bursary Scheme to provide valuable career opportunities for the next generation. Under the scheme, the company will contribute 2% of profits to the AMANDLA scholarship fund. This will enable young, talented driven individuals from families working on the farms that supply grapes for AMANDLA the opportunity to also achieve their dreams.
Speaking on the scheme, Dlamini said: ‘We have all overcome significant obstacles to achieve our career successes and now we own our own company, making AMANDLA wines for our customers in the UK and other wines for friends and customers in South Africa and the USA. This is our chance to give something back and support what matters most to us. ‘ Future plans for the brand include Amandla in cans and bag-in-box.
