Launched in September this year, the Amandla by HER Wine Collection is a bold, unique and progressive South African wine brand that is a celebration of the diverse history of Africa, the vibrancy of black culture and the collective stories of the incredible team behind these wines.

The wines, now available in Sainsbury's and Waitrose (RRP £9), are dynamic and strike a chord with bold labels that celebrate power, freedom and the opportunities that the future holds.

Amandla by HER is majority black-owned and 100% black female-run business. Amandla means 'power' and stands for the courage and resilience within women.

Headed up by managing director and talented winemaker Praisy Dlamini, the business is run by an energetic team of black wine industry women, from the winemaker, the viticulturist and the Quality Control, right through to the marketing, finance and logistics.

The wines:

Our POWER Shiraz-Zinfandel red is succulent, rich and juicy with plum, blackberries and a hint of spice – an ideal wine as we approach the Festive season and are warming our toes on the fire or getting together with friends.

Our FUTURE Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp white wine that is packed full of citrus, pineapple, and passion fruit flavours. For those that love Sauvignon, this is South African Sauvignon Blanc at its most delicious. Again, one to enjoy with friends as the fire roars.

Speaking on the launch of the wines, Amandla MD Praisy Dlamini said: ‘Amandla encompasses the vibrancy of black culture, reflects a modern inclusive lifestyle, and aims to break down social barriers. With Amandla we want to inspire and excite the new generation of wine drinkers and nurture future generations of black female business owners. This is something we can call our own in a traditionally white male-dominated environment. We are changing the game!’

The team has also set up the Amandla Bursary Scheme to provide valuable career opportunities for the next generation. Under the scheme, the company will contribute 2% of profits to the Amandla scholarship fund. This will enable young, talented, driven individuals from families working on the farms that supply grapes for Amandla the opportunity to also achieve their dreams.

Speaking on the scheme, Dlamini said: ‘We have all overcome significant obstacles to achieve our career successes and now we own our own company, making AMANDLA wines for our customers in the UK and other wines for friends and customers in South Africa and the USA. This is our chance to give something back and support what matters most to us.

Keep an eye out for the Amandla Rose in 2023 as it’s coming to the UK soon!
