Seeking summer sun? Visit Spier Wine Farm

If you're thinking of heading out to South Africa for some summer sun, we can highly recommend Spier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch as a place to visit or even stay.
In September, we were lucky enough to spend some time at Spier and we experienced so much good stuff happening that it’s hard to sum up this beautiful wine farm in a few words and photos.
Spier is an old Stellenbosch wine farm with a long history but at its core, regenerative farming and pioneering environmental and social initiatives are behind the terroir-driven wines. Winning the Drinks Business Ethical Award at the Green Awards in 2022 as well as being named South African Producer of the year - twice - by the International Wine and Spirits Competition, is testament to the work put in behind the scenes to make this wine farm so special.
Most of the (delicious) food in the restaurants is home grown and from the farm. The hotel on the Estate provides a gorgeous base to explore the farm and surrounding area. Art and nature go hand in hand here. Wherever you look and wherever you go, beautiful thought provoking art is there. The interactive nature of the art confronts you with ‘the dying slave’ being one that really hit home to me. The mosaic comes into full view as you approach, it breaks up and as you walk through and then comes together again on the other side, leaving you to draw breath as you take in the full beauty and talent on show.
You can enjoy a swim in the pool, hire a bike or run a 5km or 10km track around the farm, but by far the most fun and exhilarating way to travel is on a segway. The segway tours of the farm are brilliant and this is the best way to see the vineyards, 3,500 free-range chickens (raised without antibiotics or hormones), hear about the water saving initiatives and see the abundance of nature on the farm.
The Spier Growing for Good initiatives help communities to initiate positive social and environmental change which has a ripple effect that spreads far and wide. The Tree-preneurs project, for example, teaches people in impoverished communities to grow trees in exchange for essentials. Spier upskill people in a way that is meaningful and will impact lives positively by providing work experience, training and mentorships throughout their business.
The goal at Spier is to build a healthy ecosystem, where people are respected, valued, and empowered. Where natural resources and the environment are protected and where their businesses can inspire and help grow resilient communities.
This wine farm is a truly wonderous place to visit and stay. There's plenty to do and you can find out more here. We came away inspired and wanting to return as quickly as possible. Thank you for having us Spier Wine Farm - See you again soon!
