By Letishia Charles | 8th June 2022

Visiting the town of Tulbagh is always such a treat. With its magnificent landscape, bountiful offerings of wine estates, countryside hospitality and so much more, you can be forgiven if you consider making this village with its remarkable history, your permanent home.

This escape, popular with Capetonians and holiday-makers for its proximity, tranquillity and beauty, is a mere 90mins scenic drive from Cape Town – perfect for weekend wanderings with family and friends.

TIME OUT IN TULBAGH – TOP 5 REASONS YOU HAVE TO VISIT

1.WINE
One of my favourite wine farms to visit is without a doubt, the 300-year old Twee Jonge Gezellen – home of Krone Vintage-only Cap Classique. This beautiful venue offers MCC tastings, wine sales, as well as cellar and gallery tours for those keen to learn more about this popular vineyard.

2. STAY
So many wonderful places to stay… So little time! Whether you prefer a hotel, a Bed & Breakfast spot or a farm stay that welcomes your furry family too, you will be sure to find a place to unwind in the Tulbagh Valley. If you’re wanting to be in the heart of the valley, choose the comfort of The Tulbagh Boutique Heritage Hotel, where you can step straight out onto the streets of this historic town right after a delicious breakfast.

3. NATURE
Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the valley – For the nature lovers, there’s so much to see, do and photograph! For the adrenaline junkies, book a slide tour with Ceres Zipline Adventures – the longest tour in Africa at 1.4km in length! For those wanting to keep their feet planted safely on the ground, you can either join the Duikersdrift Parkrun every Saturday morning, take a scenic tractor ride, or go horseback riding through beautiful fruit farms and enjoy a lovely picnic after your trot. Or just drive through the countryside and marvel at the rolling yellow blanket of Canola flowers. Always a striking sight to see.

If you’re visiting during their Christmas in June celebrations, you can join the Theuniskraal Trail Run which will be held on 25 June and there will also be a Theuniskraal Mountain Bike challenge on Sunday 26 June.

4. EAT
Tulbagh offers a wide variety of world-class restaurants and coffee shops dotted all around the valley. Pop in at Made in Tulbagh for the best coffee and pie in town or enjoy ‘home-cooked meals with a difference’, at the popular Readers Restaurant, the oldest house in Tulbagh’s historic Church Street.

Visit https://www.tulbaghtourism.co.za for a full list of their restaurant offerings as well as where to stay and what to see and do in the valley.

5. EVENTS
There’s always something going on in this gorgeous valley, you’ll never run out of things to do. From trail runs to duck races, their Vintage and Vine Faire to the upcoming Christmas in Winter. If you’re heading out to Tulbagh this month, be sure to join them for a weekend extravaganza of wonderful winter warmers. The valley turns into a glorious Christmas scene complete with glittering lights, live music, all the festive trimmings and crafts, delicious belly-warming food, art and lots of fun for the little ones too. You don’t want to miss out on this fun-filled festive event on the 25th & 26th June.
